Ponds At Springtime
Ponds come alive in the spring with
plants and animals.Draw a huge pond. Draw some animals in the pond. Many plants and
insects live in and around the pond, too. Draw some of them.Be sure to label the things
that you draw.

Fun in the Puddles
Paint a large puddle. Paint you and a
friend having fun in the puddle. Be sure to paint the right clothing for playing in the
puddles!

Daffodils
Give each of the children a yellow
and a white cupcake liner. Have them flatten one of their liners and spread glue on the center portion.
Then have them place their
other liners upright on top of the glue to make daffodil flowers. If desired, attach Popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners
for stems.

Pussy Willows
Cut blue construction paper into
5" x 7" pieces and draw several straight stems on each with brown crayon. (Older children can
draw their own stems). Let the
children glue grains of Puffed Rice (cereal) up and down both sides of their stems. Parents enjoy receiving these pussy
willow pictures which are fun to do on the first day of spring.

Painting on Rocks
Use rocks gathered from a spring
walk. Let the children paint the special rocks that they found any way they wish. They can glue on yarn and
buttons if they wish.

Huge Rainbow
Take a large piece of butcher paper,
then draw arcs on it and have the children paint each arc, by putting their hand prints into paint. Red
handprints for the top arc, orange hand prints for the next arc, etc. Have the children
draw pictures of what they think a rainy or sunny day looks like. Use different kinds of
tools - markers, crayons, pen, paint, etc.

Wind Wheels
Cut a large circle out of a plastic
lid so that only a rim remains. Tape strips of newspaper, crepe paper, ribbon or cloth
onto one side of the rim. When outside, the children will be able to clutch the rim easily
and run to make the streamers 'fly.'

Cloud Art
Give each child a piece of light blue
construction paper. Fold paper in half and then unfold. Let the children squeeze 3-4 drops
of white paint from an eyedropper. Have them refold and rub across with hands, open to
reveal cloud pictures.

Cloud Collages
Color a picture on blue paper and
glue cotton balls for clouds, glue on rickrack for lightning or cut with zig zag scissors

Rain Pictures
Start out with white construction
paper and water-based markers. Place the papers out in the rain for 1-2 minutes (you could also spritz
with a water sprayer if the rain won't cooperate). Bring the papers in and blot them
dry with a paper towel, leave them to dry thoroughly. The effect is beautiful.

Spring Weather Books
Check the weather each day and have
the children draw a picture of the weather (sunny, raining, cloudy, etc.) in a homemade weather book.

Circle Birds
Give each child a 4 1/2" circle
and a 2 1/2" circle cut out of light blue construction paper. Have the children glue their circles on
pieces of dark blue construction paper, using the large circles for bodies and the
small circles for heads. Then let them decorate their circle birds with markers and
feathers.

Inkblot Butterfly
Cut out a butterfly shape fold it in
the center, have the children paint on one side. Fold and rub lightly, then unfold. The
sides will be identical.

Sticky Butterfly
Fold a piece of construction paper in
half from top to bottom and cut out the shape of a butterfly. Cut out the center of the
wings on both sides to make frames. Cut clear contact paper (or wax paper with glue) to
cover the hole in each wing. Now you have sticky space for a wing . Give the children
colored tissue paper to put on the sticky part.

Feet Butterflies
Have children take off shoes, dip
feet into shallow pan of pastel paint.Step onto a piece of paper so feet are going outward
from the heels together. When dry, add antennae with markers.

Baggie Butterflies
Fill the snack size ziplock bags with
scraps of tissue paper and cellophane and then gather them in the middle with a half of a
chenille stem. Twist and bend the stem into antennae.

Crayon Butterfly Sun Catcher
Using vegetable peeler (or an old
cheese grater) shave crayons into small thin pieces. Place a sheet of wax paper onto newspaper and
sprinkle with crayon bits. Place another sheet of wax paper on top and press with a warm
iron for a few seconds. Cut into butterfly shape and hang in a window.

Tissue Paper Butterflies
Cut butterfly shapes from white
construction paper. Set out assorted colors of 1-inch tissue paper squares, small
containers of water and paintbrushes. Have the children paint the butterfly shapes with
glue and water (mixed) and place the tissue paper squares randomly on the butterfly
shapes. These are absolutely beautiful!

Coffee Filter Butterflies
Supplies: Food Coloring Coffee Filters Eye Dropper or Straws
Wooden Clothes Pin
Pipe Cleaner
Color small bowls of water with food
coloring Using an eye dropper or a straw, scatter drops of colored water onto round coffee filters and
watch the colors bleed and
blend. While the filters dry draw eyes and body details on wooden clothespins. Gather each coffee filter up
in the center and clip with the clothespin. Make an antenna for each butterfly by
inserting a pipe cleaner into the end of the clothespin and twisting it secure. Bend the ends of the pipe
cleaner to make it look realistic. You can use tissue paper instead of coffee filters for
a multi-layered effect. Decorate with sequins and buttons. Make caterpillars from green
pom-poms glued to a large paper leaf (with a bite taken out of it) for a before and after
exhibit.

Pastel Painting
In the art center, provide the
children with pastel colors to create spring pictures. An easy way to create pastel colors
is to add white to the color!

Blow Painting (to illustrate
wind)
Place a spoonful of paint on a piece
of paper.Provide the child with half a straw. Then instruct them to blow through the straw
onto the paint to splatter it.

Seed Catalogue
These are great for cutting and
pasting activities. Also, seasonal catalogues are good as well.

Spring Collage
Make collages from seeds,twigs,and
soft maple and elm pods.

Egg Carton Caterpillars
Provide each child with half an egg
carton (lengthwise) and have them paint it. Use pipe cleaners for the antennae.
They may paint or decorate with gummed paper according to their own imagination.

Cotton Ball Art
Use cotton balls to make lambs,
rabbits or clouds.

Spring Bunny
Here is an easy craft the children
can do. 1. Fill a
sandwich-sized plastic bag with cotton balls.
2. Close the plastic bag by folding
the open end over and taping it to the back side using clear tape. (not necessary to
tape if you are using ziploc bags)
3. Tie a yarn bow around the bag to
make the bunny's head.
4. Cut bunny ears, a nose, paws, and
a carrot from construction paper.
5. Glue the paper cutouts on the
bunny.Glue on two buttons for the bunny eyes.

Make tissue paper
flowers
Fold colored tissue paper accordian style, twist a pipe cleaner in the middle and fan out
Add perfume if you like. (remember to check if any children are allergic to perfume before
doing this! It may be safer to send home a little note suggesting that perfume be put on
it at home, if desired!)

Decorate flower pots
Some suggestions:Stickers for the plastic pots, color paper cups, or paint clay pots.

Cut out flower shapes from construction paper. Stick tissue paper, feathers, pom poms etc
onto shape. Attach pipe cleaners
to flower make several and put in vase for a "bouquet"

Daffodils
Give each of the children a yellow and a white cupcake liner. Have them flatten one of
their liners and spread glue on
the center portion. Then have them place their other liners upright on top of the glue to
make daffodil flowers. If desired, attach popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners for stems.

Pussy Willows
Cut blue construction paper into 5" x 7" pieces and draw several straight stems
on each with brown crayon. (Older
children can draw their own stems). Let the children glue grains of Puffed
Rice (cereal) up and down both sides of
their stems.
