A poem for MOTHER
M...is for the many things she gave me
O...means only that she's growing old
T...is for the tears she shed to save me

H...is for her heart of purest gold
E...is for her eyes, with love-light shining

R...means right, and right she'll always be
Put them all together, they spell "mother"
...a word that means the world to me

Use a small box like a jewelry box or make one out of boxboard or  cut a small piece of wood. Have each child wrap it in paper or fabric  Tie a ribbon with a bow around it. And attach this poem:
This is a very special gift

That you can never see.
The reason its so special is
Its just for you from me.
You can never unwrap it ,
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close to your heart,
Its filled with love inside.  (child's name and the date)
Print the following poem on parchment paper on the computer and at the bottom have the children make thumbprint flowers. Use pastel colored inkpads and have the children make a circle of thumbprints. add the leaves and stems for the younger children.Put each poem in an acrylic frame, however, if cost is a big factor, you can make your own frames.
A hundred years from now
it will not matter
what my bank account was,
or the kind of car I drove...
But the world may be different
because I was important
in the life of a child.
Thanks Mom!
Love,  (child's name& date)
Make a plaque , card or poster using the word MOTHER and use each letter for a word describing her.  See example:

E nergetic
R reliable

Decorate the jar with ribbon, paint, fabric or anything you may want.
Use only 1 tbl or so for each bath.

Mother's Day Card
Start with a piece of 8 1/2 x11 pastel
colored paper folded in half. Cut out vases out of either wallpaper or fabric and glue them on the front. Then trace the children's  hands in two colors look like tulips. Then attach the hands to a length of green ribbon enough to fit around your neck. Cut a slit into the vase and slip the ribbon through so that the flowers are sitting the vase. Add a small square of paper behind the vase  for the ribbon to sit in. The inside read "Whenever you need a hug from me, wear this special necklace lovingly from me."

Mother's Day Pins
Use Crayola Model Magic. Give each child a little ball of the clay and  use a very small rolling pin to roll the clay flat. Then  use a cookie cutter in the shape of a heart. Follow the directions on the package for drying. It usually is a day. Then paint them red. Add any decorations you want. Hot glue a pin backing to the back and your pin is ready to give to that special mom or nan.
Mother's Day Candle
This is something that you can give as a gift for Mother.  Thoroughly clean a regular sized tuna fish can in the dishwasher. Give each child a can. Have the child paint on a good amount of tacky glue onto the sides of the can. Roll the can in colorful fish gravel (found at the pet store) and allow to dry. Next, paint a thin layer of the glue onto the inside bottom of the tuna can and sprinkle onto that some colored sand. Shake off extra. Allow to dry.  Purchase colorful votive candles(you can sometimes find them 4/$1.00 at a discount store) and using a glue gun, secure the candle to the center inside of the tuna can. You now have a lovely votive candle holder. This is a simple, low cost gift that also teaches the children about recycling.
Make mom a set of notecards and envelopes, the notecards are made from cardstock paper and then print the child's handprint on the front in the child's choice of colors.
A Plaster Handprint for Mom
Make them so the handprint sticks out instead of going in. You use plumbers putty. Set an ample amount of putty on the table, about an inch thick, use rolling pins to smooth the top. Help child to press their hand into the putty, pressing gently on each finger and on the palm of their hand. When you are satisfied with the print, place an embroidery hoop on the putty, centering the handprint. Make your plaster of paris and pour into the hoop. After the plaster is set, remove it from the putty. The putty can be reused -- which is good because it is a little costly! They turn out cute -- and show a lot of detail! You can even color the plaster of paris powder with dry tempera paint before you add the water, but it seems to be better if you do not make it too dark.

Mother Doll
Materials:  toilet paper tubes or a paper towel tube cut in half small paper cups (looks like the size small Dixie cups you use in bathroom) wallpaper samples pipe cleaners construction paper scrapes yarn and glue Let each child glue a paper cup upside down on the paper roll tube. Cut a piece of wallpaper to glue around the tube like a dress. Add pipe cleaner arms, yarn hair, and facial detail as desired.

Trace child's hands and attach with a long piece of yarn (measure child's arms).Put into an envelope with a note that says,
"MOM, ( or
Grandma..etc) I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH...
Book of Kisses
The children can make a "Book Of Kisses" to give to their mothers on Mother's Day. Make booklets by cutting paper into 4 inch squares and stapling ten sheets together in one booklet for each child. Write "Book of Kisses" on the top page and invite the children to decorate the page that is the cover of the booklet. In small groups, color the children's lips with lipstick and have them kiss each page of the book. Send it home with a note explaining that the mothers can redeem each page for a real kiss. The mom's will love this gift!

Mother's Day Card
Materials - construction paper, tempera paint, pie pan, scissors, and a pencil. Directions - fold the construction paper in half to form a card. Pour enough tempera paint in the pie pan to cover the bottom. Have the child lay the palm of the hand in the paint. Take the hand out of the paint and press the hand on the front of the card, with the small finger along the folded edge. Let dry. Leaving the card folded, cut out the handprint so the card is now in the shape of the handprint. Open the card and write a message.
For Mother's Day ,paint a plant pot and then re-pot a petunia  into the pot.

Ask the child to tell you one thing they love about their mom and  write it on a big heart which we paste into the center of a fingerpainting the child has done and we display them for everyone to read.

Cut tissue paper into small pieces and glue on to baby food jars (use a glue/water mix and you can paint it on with a water color brush). First paint the jar with the mixture and place the tissue paper on. Then, after that has dried, paint over the tissue paper with the same mix. Put a tea light inside and you have a beautiful candle. These can be customized to any season or event, depending on the colors of tissue paper you use.

Bulletin Board: Ways to  help Mother
Make a handprint to go with this poem:
I miss you when we're not together
I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
Since you saw me last?
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick
When and where and why?
So look upon this hand print plaque
That's hanging on your wall.
And memories will come back of me,
When I was very small.
