Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears. Draw what the animals do in the night and
the day. Which
was you favorite animal in the story? Why? Draw a picture of it if you like.
What do you think would
have happened if the mosquito had gone to the council meeting? Make up a story about how other insects got
their habits.
 
Butterfly
and other Compound Words
Butterfly is a compound
word. It is made by putting two smaller words together, butter and fly. Can
you think of other compound words? Make a list of compound words.
 
Acting Out a Story
Read aloud Where Does a
Butterfly Go When It Rains? by May Garelick. Assign the parts of the different animals in
the story to each child. As you read the story again, have each child act out the part as
it is read. ( mole, bee, snake, grasshopper, etc.) All the children can then be
butterflies and find a place to hide when you read, "But where does a butterfly go
when it rains?"

Unusual Insects
Display pictures of
unusual insects and supply insect and bug books(eg. M. L. Roberts' book World's
Weirdest Bugs and Other Creepy Creatures) Have children identify some unusual insects
and answer questions such as: What does it eat? Where does it live? Does it have enemies? What is special about this insect?
The chart above can be
modified for this activity.The students can work in groups and do a presentation to the
class about their findings.
 
ABC Buggy Alphabet
Have children work in
pairs to make a Buggy Alphabet. After each letter of the alphabet write two or more
words that have to do with insects or bugs. They can begin this activity at the beginning
of the unit, asking them to fill in what they possibly can from their knowledge of
insects. Then at the end of the unit have them return to the activity and fill in the
remaining words.
