Pine Cones
I have used regular bleach and soaked the cones. If your
cones are closed, they open up very nice, and have a wonderful "bleached"
look, and the decorating ideas are almost endless!!
Thanks Jane!
Put the pinecones in the oven first to kill any little critters
that may have taken up residence in them. This way you gift will not also include
any unwelcome guests.
Thanks Maria!
I will be dipping some pinecones in Cinnamon Potpourri and
also spray painting some gold
and making angels out of them
Thanks Dana !
~Make barrettes out of pinecones and acorns and such.
Glue (supper glue..hot glue will not hold well:o) about 3 pinecones along the
barrette (use those metal ones with the tension (sp?) rod in them. Use the gold
ones:o), then glue acorns and smaller pinecones to fill up any bare spots.
Take it outside and spray paint the whole thing gold. It's real pretty during
the holidays
~Make a topiary
Take a Styrofoam ball, stick a stick in it (not too straight, but sturdy...it's the
trunk...you "can" soak some twigs in water for a few days and then wrap
them around each other to make a larger trunk..but you have to let it dry out
completely..I'm too impatient for all that:o). Cover the ball with moss, glue
pinecones and acorns all around it (I have seen ones like this done with all
acorns..it's cute:o) Get a cup of some kind...a pot (for plants) or a tea cup,
etc. Cut up a piece of
Styrofoam, and jam it in there. Stick your
"trunk" into it. It should stand up on it's own..if not, try
shortening the trunk or finding a larger "pot". Cover the Styrofoam in the
pot with more moss.
~Do you have kids around? When I was a kid in girl scouts we made animals out of pinecones, pine needles, acorns, sticks (the project had to be ALL natural). I made a horse. a long large pinecone for the body..sticks for the legs, pineneedles for a tail , a shorter thin pinecone for the neck, and even shorter thin pinecone for the head, pine needles for the main. But you can do many things. Make a snowman from the pinecones with stick arms , etc.
~Fire starters. There are many ways to do this. here's how I have done it. Take a muffin tin. lay a wick in each muffin hole (1/2 of the wick needs to be left out of the hole) put a pinecone ontop. Melt (with a double broiler method) some paraffin wax. I added essential oil for smell (candle scents, and even plain vanilla extract will work if you want a smell!) and crayon bits for color. Then poor some in each tin..over the pinecone and wick. Let dry. I put these all into a basket and added a box of fire place matches, and put a bow around it. Makes a cute gift..and a useful decoration...if you have a fireplace
~We all know you can roll a pine cone in peanut butter then bird seed for a bird feeder
~Make a country
Christmas garland! Take a large, sharp needle and string them on some
household twine! If you have a drill...take 'em outside and drill holes in
them first(makes it WAY easier. LOL). If you want to put it outside (we live
in the south..where the birds actually GO during the
winter:o) roll it in peanut butter and bird seed.
My kids love to look at the birds
~Roll pinecones in glue
then roll them in glitter. Place a bunch in a bowl for Christmas.
Thanks Teri!
Don't forget the pine cones for the fireplace dripped with
scented candle wax.
Thanks Cindy!
Glue a bead on top for a head, use green leaves (from silk
flowers) as wings and Spanish moss as hair. Add a halo made from a small pearl
strand and viola, an angel! If the twigs are sturdy and strong enough, you
could tie them together, or glue and make little sleds to hang on a Christmas
tree. Decorate with ribbon and dried flowers.
Thanks Shirley B.!
Try making a wreath out of them. Get a wreath shaped form
- colored if possible, and attach different colored fall leaves to it. Silk ones
would do nicely. Then space your pinecones around it, interspersing with more
leaves, the acorns...arranged in little groups maybe, and some twigs poking in and out in
all the stuff. Make a bunch of the twigs at the bottom of the wreath, tie a ribbon
or bow around them and let the ends hang for a nice effect.
Thanks Ari!
Mini-tree: Dip pine cones in melted, colored (crayon bits
or wax dye) paraffin wax. Use kitchen tongs to dip. Melt wax in coffee can
placed in 5" of water in saucepan. Place wooden star on top of cone and glass
beads on scales while wax is still warm. When cool, place tree in small container
filled with moss.
I think these would look adorable in the little terra cotta
pots ... what do you all think?
Thanks Tammy!
I've seen the pinecones dipped in colored scented candle was
and arranged in a basket. Very pretty and smelled wonderful. You can even add some glitter
to them.
Thanks Paula!
